A Solar Flare on Valentine’s Day

A powerful solar flare, belonging to Class-X, occurred on February 15, 2011, at 01:56 GMT, followed by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) directed towards Earth, at a speed about 900 km/s. It reached the Earth’s magnetosphere on 17th, at 01:00 UT (8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time). Contrary to expectations, the impact was not dramatic, though geomagnetic storms are anticipated in the next several hours and aurorae. The flare was given off by sunspot number 1158.
